CO2 Performance Ladder

The CO2 Performance Ladder is a sustainability tool that helps companies and governments reduce carbon emissions within the organisation, in projects and in the business sector. The 5-level Ladder is used as a CO2 management system and as a procurement instrument.

Significance has been certified at level 3 since 2024. This entails that we have a clear picture of our emissions and energy consumption and have linked ambitious reduction targets to concrete measures.

In 2024, our energy policy was formalized in accordance with the CO2 performance ladder system. This is also reflected in a significant reduction in our CO2 emissions compared to the reference year 2023. Our emissions were already low: only 14.4 tons, or 0.84 tons of CO2 per FTE in 2023. This is partly due to our energy-efficient office, centrally located in The Hague, with excellent accessibility by bicycle and public transport. In 2024, our emissions were reduced by 85% to a total of 2.2 tons of CO2, or 0.13 tons of CO2 per FTE. The decrease is largely due to a reduction in air travel. In 2024, the conferences we attended were mostly held at locations with good public transport accessibility. In addition, our outing that year was close to home. Our energy consumption at the office also decreased.

Our ambitions for the coming years are to further reduce our emissions and energy consumption. Our goal for 2033 is to reduce emissions per FTE by 30% compared to 2023. Business air travel is the main source of our emissions. That is why we have a policy of only flying when there is no reasonable alternative. In 2025, we want to map our electricity consumption in detail in order to identify further reduction opportunities.
